The Ngutu factory is operated by the Raikamba Farmers Cooperative Society (F.C.S.), which owns seven factories in the area, on the Aberdare Mountains to the south of Mt. Kenya. Farmers in this area started to plant coffee in the early 1950s, and the co-op currently has 4,000 member farmers, about 1,200 of whom deliver to the Ngutu factory.
